But that ends up leaving many businesses with no client flow, and no organic reach which can spell disaster. So in today’s article, I am going to share my tips on how to develop a marketing mindset that I have found by working as a marketer in the digital marketing space. Hopefully, through this guide, I can teach you how to think like a digital marketer. Welcome back to the marketing class!

To start thinking like a Digital Marketer, it’s important you understand what traits a digital marketing specialist brings to the table.  Below are 5 key traits I find are immensely powerful for becoming a successful marketing strategist.

1. Analytical Mindset: More than anything else, Digital marketing requires you to understand and be comfortable analyzing numbers. if you are not already a numbers person, it’s important to learn some basics of analytics to start building this skillset.

2. Adaptability: The digital marketing landscape is constantly evolving. Successful digital marketers embrace change and stay up-to-date with the latest trends, technologies, and algorithms to adjust their strategies accordingly.

3. Creativity: Creativity is essential for developing unique and engaging content that stands out in a crowded online space. Effective digital marketers can brainstorm innovative ideas for campaigns, advertisements, social media posts, and more.

4. Strong Communication Skills: Digital marketers need to convey their messages clearly across various digital platforms. This includes writing compelling copy, creating engaging visuals, and using effective communication to connect with their target audience.

5. Time Management: You may not have thought of this one, but I have noticed that Time Management and organizational skills can separate high-quality digital marketing strategists from people who want to be good at digital marketing.

These are just 5 traits that help improve your digital marketing skillset. I left a lot off this list but remember that these traits can be developed and improved over time with experience, learning, and a dedication to honing your digital marketing skills.

Cultivate Your Customer-Centric Thinking: Putting Your Audience First

One thing digital marketers do that sometimes business owners don’t is being an advocate for customers. As a business owner, it’s your job to make sure the business is profitable. As a digital marketer, it’s your job to make sure the audience is getting what they are buying.

Yes, Business owners should think about making their customers happy. But not in the same way that digital marketing strategists need to. In order to think like a digital marketing expert, you need to think in terms of the emotions your target demographic is feeling and how you can communicate with them better so they find your services or products valuable.

What’s the difference between business owner thinking and marketing thinking?

If you own a business, chances are you are really focused on maintaining profitability. Although marketers should be working within a dedicated budget, they should not be obsessed with profitability.

Digital marketers are obsessed with optimizing the ROAS or Return on Ad Spend. Meaning they are obsessed with making sure we spend as little as possible while bringing in as many high-quality leads or sales as possible.

Sometimes this is related to profitability, for example, if you run an e-commerce business. But most of the time, they are not directly related.

To do so, a digital marketing expert needs to understand your audience, have a customer-focused mindset, and audience empathy. This can be hard if they have a business manager constantly pressuring them to be profitable.

Don’t get me wrong, you need to stick to a budget, but great digital marketers don’t think about making the company profitable, they think about keeping their leads nurtured and finding more audience members to bring in.

Digital Marketing Experts are Data Data-Driven Decision Makers

No matter who you are, no matter what business you run, you generate data. Digital marketing experts love that data because it tells us answers to many questions that make it easier

In the world of digital marketing, data isn’t just a collection of numbers and statistics; it’s the key that unlocks the doors to success.

Digital marketing experts are passionate about reviewing data because it provides invaluable insights into the performance and impact of their strategies. Every click, conversion, and interaction leaves a digital footprint that tells a story of user behavior and engagement.

Data analysis isn’t just about measuring success; it’s about understanding the ‘why’ behind the numbers. It empowers marketers to fine-tune their campaigns, optimize content, and tailor their approach to align with their target audience’s preferences.

The fascination with data isn’t merely a fixation on analytics; it’s a strategic pursuit that fuels innovation, enabling digital marketers to craft more compelling narratives, create impactful campaigns, and ultimately drive tangible results in the dynamic landscape of the digital realm.

Successful digital marketing strategists are obsessed with consumer psychology.

They understand that buyer behavior isn’t just an art—it’s a science. From understanding buyer motivation to employing emotional triggers in marketing, you need to be obsessed with not only the “how” of digital marketing but the “Why”.

One way to cultivate this obsession is to simply google “your business niche marketing study” and see what comes up. That will get you started in the right direction.

Becoming a Storyteller: Harnessing the Power of Narrative in Marketing Campaigns

Part of the reason I include creativity as a key trait of successful marketing strategists is that it’s important to be able to write a great story.

The art of storytelling has emerged as a beacon of resonance in the realm of marketing. Becoming a storyteller isn’t just about crafting words; it’s about weaving a narrative that captivates, engages, and leaves an indelible mark.

Learning the art of structuring narratives that evoke emotions, create connections, and drive actions… it’s not easy. I personally recommend reading every day to enhance your creative mind which is why I leave my phone on the bathroom table, and have a Kindle at my bedside instead.

Great storytellers are able to enhance your brand perception and keep the marketing campaign copy specific to the brand story.
